The Man Behind the Course
I first encountered Herman when he was deep in the trenches of international trade—not just teaching it, but living it. He was responsible for managing Export Logistics at Sasol, one of South Africa's largest and most respected exporters. In that role, he didn't just oversee documentation—he built systems that transformed how the company operated.
He developed South Africa's first comprehensive trade documentation software, working entirely in DOS at a time when that kind of innovation was unheard of. His system handled every export document, from commercial invoices to bills of lading for each shipping line. It was so precise that it would tell the operator exactly which pre-printed forms to load before printing—eliminating errors, saving time, and ensuring flawless execution across thousands of shipments.
What struck me most while working with him wasn't just the depth of his knowledge—it was his ability to explain complex things simply. He takes what looks impossible and breaks it down into steps anyone can follow.
